Restoran Kak Kak (Dim Sum / Taman Maju Jaya / Beside Plaza Pelangi)

Hot on the heels of Restoran Gui Yuan and Restoran Tasixi, is another dim sum outlet, Restoran Kak Kak. Like Gui Yuan, you must be there early before they sold out by noon. It is beside Restoran Yi Bao which serves the best Mee Hoon Kueh in town.

Restoran Kak Kak, in my opinion serves better dim sum and more variety than Gui Yuan and is very much nearer to the CIQ, a good eatery for the non adventurous to have JB dim sum. Of course, if you are the atas type, do try the Halal buffet dim sum at Puteri Pacific Hotel instead.  Without further adieu, picture speaks a thousand words, have fun salivating over the dim sum...

Restoran Gui Yuan (Dim Sum / Taman Johor Jaya / Near Jusco Tebrau City)

Restoran Gui Yuan, the famous Dim Sum restaurant at Taman Johor Jaya. For all Singaporeans who wish to grace this Dim Sum outlet over the weekend, you must really wake up early for they will most probably be sold out by 12 pm on Sundays. Alternatively, you can visit them at 730 pm for the night opening time.

After tasting a number of Dim Sum oulets in JB, I must say that Gui Yuan serves the most varieties like Singapore and have one of the better tasting Dim Sums in JB.  Of course, nothing beats the famous Red Star Dim Sum restaurant we have in Chinatown in Singapore.  However, if you are planning a trip to Jusco Tebrau City, you can really drop by over at Gui Yuan for some cheap, nice and tasty Dim Sum, do not expect Red Star standard though.

Information
Address: 27, Jalan Dedap 8 (Taman Johor Jaya)
Opening Hours: Monday (Rest Day), 6am - 12pm and 730pm - 11pm

You must be there early before
they sold out by 1130 am.

Reasonable Pricing. Do not
expect super cheap prices though.
Tasty, made on the spot.
Smooth texture with tasty
prawn meat.

Uhm, Crab Meat on Siew Mai?
Maybe they ran out of
the usual crab roe for
Siew Mai :)
Something Unique. Vege Crystal Bun.
Har Gao

Great taste, can fight with Red Star.

Must Try, authentic and traditional
taste for the steam pork meat.
Verdict : Pricing is reasonable at $20 but  I did not get to eat the filling stuff like bun, porridge as they have sold out. A pity I was late at 1130 am. I will visit the place again if I am there early in future.

Restoran Tasixi ( Dim Sum / Former Five Star Chicken Rice )

Restoran Five Star Chicken Rice has been replaced by Restoran Tasixi. Talking about dim sum in Johor, many would have probably been to the Restoran Tasixi. However, can anyone confirm if they have another branch and if this is the same Restoran Taxisi that operate in Jalan Serampang some time back?

If this is the same Restoran Taixisi in Jalan Serampang, it used to serve many Singaporeans craving for cheap and nice dim sum over the weekends. Personally, I think Taixisi is a love or hate kind of place. Love it for its cheap dim sum. hate it for its limited items. The one thing I always wish they have on their menu is Egg Tarts, however, it is still worth a visit for its Dim Sum as it is nearer to the causeway and open till quite late in the afternoon as compared to Gui Yan at Taman Johor Jaya which closes early at around 1 pm.

So after a few sundays of dieting, I decided to go for some early morning dim sum instead. When we were there, there's probably around 5 tables occupied, and service was not too bad. I did not have to go to the push carts like Red Star in Singapore, but the food came to us. :) The servers there are friendly and made recommendations to us. One point though is that I do not really understand the pricing given.  We ordered the usual stuff like har gaw, siew mai, scallop dumplings, cheong fun, char siew su, glutinous rice, etc. Personally, I find the dim sum here too be above average. The skin for the scallop dumpling and the har gaw could be thinner.

However, you must really try their Fried Carrot Cake which is wonderful and beyong description. It beats any fried carrot cake that I have ever eaten.

Restoran New HongKong (Non- Halal / Jalan Ibrahim Sultan / Overlooking Singapore)

Hi everyone, it has been a long time. Been busy at work. Finally back to my beloved Johor Food Fest .......

Yum Cha is an integral part of Cantonese’s culinay culture which should be proud of. In Cantonese, yum cha means “drink tea”, and is a dining experience which involves drinking Chinese tea and eating dim sum dishes. Dim sum is a variety of small dishes; they can be steamed or fried, savoury or sweet and maybe tradition or fusion. They are usually tiny and will be served as three to four pieces in one dish. Because of the small portions people can try a wide variety of food.

Located near to the new Johor Bahru CIQ, New Hong Kong Restaurant offers Chinese “Dim Sum” in the comfort of an air-conditioned environment. New Hong Kong served a-la-carte menu, which includes “Siew Mai”, “Har Gao”, “Chee Cheong Fun”, Fish Porridge, Carrot Cake and “Lor Mai Gai”.

Depending on what you order, it cost about RM$20.00/pax for a filling meal. You can also order from their non-Dim Sum menu which includes the norm – steamed fish, crispy chicken, Yam Ring etc. It is located near to the Johor Bahru CIQ and the food standard here is comparable to what you find in Singapore.
