Restoran Kak Kak (Dim Sum / Taman Maju Jaya / Beside Plaza Pelangi)

Hot on the heels of Restoran Gui Yuan and Restoran Tasixi, is another dim sum outlet, Restoran Kak Kak. Like Gui Yuan, you must be there early before they sold out by noon. It is beside Restoran Yi Bao which serves the best Mee Hoon Kueh in town.

Restoran Kak Kak, in my opinion serves better dim sum and more variety than Gui Yuan and is very much nearer to the CIQ, a good eatery for the non adventurous to have JB dim sum. Of course, if you are the atas type, do try the Halal buffet dim sum at Puteri Pacific Hotel instead.  Without further adieu, picture speaks a thousand words, have fun salivating over the dim sum...

Restoran Hong Kong Boy (Taman Johor Jaya)

Restoran Hong Kong Boy, I have heard so much about it from johor food forums. I decided to wander into the "official local food court" of Taman Johor Jaya. Boy, am I not disappointed! Restoran Hong Kong Boy serves mainly the local community of Taman Johor Jaya, away from the commercialised areas serving Singaporeans like Taman Sentosa. In fact, I am hesitant to recommend Taman Johor Jaya and Hong Kong Boy as I "selfishly" wanted to keep the knowledge of such a wonderful place away from most Singaporeans... (Just Joking).

If you really want to try authentic local style of street food like Hokkien Mee, Fried Char Kway Teow (where almost everyone go to HK Boy for), Prawn Mee,  Duck Rice, Grilled Stringray, Rojak, it is the place to be.

I do strongly recommend HK Boy if you are visiting Jusco Tebrau City. In fact, do drop by for dinner and supper if you are gamed enough, that is when more stalls are opened. They will corner off one street just for dinner and supper enthusiasts. However, if you are an "Atas wannabe", do not bother visiting HK Boy.

Restoran Gui Yuan (Dim Sum / Taman Johor Jaya / Near Jusco Tebrau City)

Restoran Gui Yuan, the famous Dim Sum restaurant at Taman Johor Jaya. For all Singaporeans who wish to grace this Dim Sum outlet over the weekend, you must really wake up early for they will most probably be sold out by 12 pm on Sundays. Alternatively, you can visit them at 730 pm for the night opening time.

After tasting a number of Dim Sum oulets in JB, I must say that Gui Yuan serves the most varieties like Singapore and have one of the better tasting Dim Sums in JB.  Of course, nothing beats the famous Red Star Dim Sum restaurant we have in Chinatown in Singapore.  However, if you are planning a trip to Jusco Tebrau City, you can really drop by over at Gui Yuan for some cheap, nice and tasty Dim Sum, do not expect Red Star standard though.

Information
Address: 27, Jalan Dedap 8 (Taman Johor Jaya)
Opening Hours: Monday (Rest Day), 6am - 12pm and 730pm - 11pm

You must be there early before
they sold out by 1130 am.

Reasonable Pricing. Do not
expect super cheap prices though.
Tasty, made on the spot.
Smooth texture with tasty
prawn meat.

Uhm, Crab Meat on Siew Mai?
Maybe they ran out of
the usual crab roe for
Siew Mai :)
Something Unique. Vege Crystal Bun.
Har Gao

Great taste, can fight with Red Star.

Must Try, authentic and traditional
taste for the steam pork meat.
Verdict : Pricing is reasonable at $20 but  I did not get to eat the filling stuff like bun, porridge as they have sold out. A pity I was late at 1130 am. I will visit the place again if I am there early in future.

Johor Premium Outlet (JPO)

For all shopping junkies, the official opening of Johor Premium Outlet aka jb premium outlet on 11/12/11 has arrived. Access their website here

What is Premium Outlet?
Premium Outlet is a portfolio of outlet shopping centers which brings together the finest brands in unique outdoor settings and offers impressive savings of 25 to percent every day. According to my wife, each outlet has designs specially allocated to them not found in any other Premium outlets. Of course, the designs are usually of past seasons.

Johor Premium Outlets is a collection of 80 designer and name brand outlet stores featuring saving of 25% to 65% every day. Johor Premium Outlets is located at the intersection of the North-South Expressway and the Second Link Expressway.

Personal Take on Johor Premium Outlets:
I am really happy for Johor Bahru to be able to build such a wonderful shopping area in Iskandar. The whole area is easily accessible, well built with a food court, lots of cafes and even a playground to keep the children entertained.

However, their pricing must be made more attractive and worthwhile for the travel. Read the reports here

My wife do travels to overseas factory outlet as far as the United States. She commented that their prices are not really as cheap as overseas' outlets. When the items are on sale in Singapore, the pricing is roughly the same. I cannot expect JPO to lower the prices but if they do want to attract more locals and tourists aka Singaporeans, they must really promote more goods at really attractive prices to allow the place to be a success. This is of course a poor man's opinion, all you rich fellas may not agree with me.

Nevertheless, I am really impressed with the shopping area and there are plans to expand the place further. So, let's keep our fingers cross and hope for more attractive offers from JPO.
